Children's Safety
Last updated: February 2026
MomentA is designed to be safe for young creators. This page explains the protections we apply to accounts held by people under 18, consistent with the Illinois Children's Social Media Safety Act and our obligations to protect minors online. These protections are on by default and cannot be silently disabled.
Age brackets & age-appropriate defaults
At sign-up we ask for a date of birth and place each account into an age bracket: under 13, 13–15, 16–17, or adult. Every account under 18 is treated as a protected minor and starts with our full set of youth-safety protections switched on. We apply the same protections regardless of how a minor account is created.
Under-13 accounts (parental consent first)
Accounts for children under 13 are held for verifiable parental consent before they can be used, in line with COPPA. A parent or guardian receives an email to review and approve the account, and they control which features are available.
Teen accounts (13–17)
Teens can start creating right away, with all protections enabled by default. We collect a parent or guardian email and send them a private link where they can review each protection and choose whether to relax it. Nothing is loosened without that explicit guardian action.
Protections we enforce for minors
- Quiet hours.Non-urgent notifications and emails are held overnight (10pm–7am in the account's local time) and delivered during the day instead.
- No targeted marketing. We never send promotional or engagement-driven emails to a minor's account, and minors are excluded from marketing campaigns.
- No algorithmic feeds. Minors are not shown engagement-optimized or AI-ranked feeds designed to maximize time spent.
- Restricted publishing & messaging. Publishing content publicly and messaging other people stay off unless a guardian turns them on.
- Kid-safe content generation. AI generation for minor accounts is constrained to age-appropriate, kid-safe output, and any content marked for a kids audience is moderated before it can be published.
- No commerce or ads. Shopping, marketplace purchasing, and advertising surfaces are disabled for minor accounts.
Parental controls
Parents and guardians can review and adjust a minor's protections at any time using the private controls link we email them, or by contacting us. Turning a protection off records the guardian's decision with a timestamp; protections that are not explicitly relaxed remain on.
Data minimization
Dates of birth and guardian emails are stored encrypted at rest (AES-256-GCM), and we use a minor's data only to operate the account and apply these protections — never to target them with marketing. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
